New Antidepressant Cymbalta

by Tim Pheil LPN

Cymbalta (Duloxetine Hydrochloride) is a new antidepressant. What is interesting is that it is SNRI (serotonin and noradrenaline uptake inhibitor) of which only Effexor was the only FDA approved drug of that class until now. If you go to Cymbalta site you only read that its only for depression. What they are not saying is that the SNRIs are excellent for treating depression with anxiety. But they probably haven't done the studies yet for approval from the FDA.

At this time very few effectiveness studies are available.

Lessened side effects for this class of drug (SNRI & SSRI) reported. No weight gain. Antidepressant effects should be reached after one week. Physicians Handout.

During initial case study one successful suicide reported.

Another SNRI Milnacipran is being used in France. Its being marketed for Fibromyalgia since it appears to have some analgesic affects.  It is now in Phase 2 studies.
