Male, Female, Email: The Struggle for Relatedness in a Paranoid Society  Uk  Can by Michael A. Civin "Many people have heard or read of the scientific study that links Internet use to depression. This book expands on that notion, attempting to place Internet use in the context of a "paranoid society" beset by increasing personal isolation, bewildering technology, and end-of-the-millennium pressures. Civin, a professor at Adelphi University and a practicing psychoanalyst, uses a number of case studies to illustrate his belief that the Internet serves different functions for different users. On the one hand, he suggests, it can serve as a means of connectedness, facilitating complex exchanges among the self and others. On the other hand, it can insulate the user from meaningful contact with others, providing only one-dimensional exchanges that simulate or substitute for real, full relationships. Civin's ideas--which combine case studies with postmodern theory, personal experiences, and different branches of psychological thought--are well presented. Throughout, he explains the somewhat dauntingly academic language, making this book fascinating reading for anyone with a passing interest in both technology and psychology.

As Nature Made Him : The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl  Uk  Can by John Colapinto "Very interesting story about a pair of Canadian twins. After a botched circumcise on one, they ended up having to reassign him in to female. He was raised as a girl. But a psychiatrist who was over seeing the case and lied for 30 years reporting that it was well and that child was fine. And that gender was learned, not nature. And the Psychiatric community believed him. Thus setting GID research to a stand still for 30 years. The child had a horrific life, trouble with the law, suicide attempts starting at age 13. Self mutilation until her was told the truth at age 30. He later settled for a multi million settlement with the Drs and Hospital. From the last of my knowledge he was planning to be reassigned as a man."

The Yeast Connection: A Medical Breakthrough  Uk  Can by William G. Crook, Cynthia P. Crook (Illustrator), James H. Brodsky "If you or someone you know suffers from fatigue, please buy this book. If you know of a child who is autistic or hyper or has learning problems, please buy this book for their parents. Dr. Crook's treatment program is a recommendation of a medicine from a doctor, along with watching what you eat, and other simple measures. Dr. Crook presented an excellent book, full of resources, actual patient scenarios, and changes to implement immediately. The book can be passed on to anyone's doctor easily because Dr. Crook explains that he himself is a doctor & states how he became involved treating yeast. He explains the symptoms of yeast overgrowth in the body, it's causes, and it's cures. The book gives so many cases of patients that it's easier to see how one patient's symptoms may differ from another's - but be related to your specific problem. I was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus and was told by my doctor that only my symptoms could be treated. Epstein-Barr is related to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & I have strugged with tiredness for years. This book has so helped me. I bought it on a Friday & am buying it Monday to take to my doctor."

Party of One: The Loners' Manifesto  Uk  Can by Anneli S. Rufus "Rufus's achievement in "Party of One" is to boldly challenge one of the most widely held assumptions: being alone is inevitably bad, a sign of illness and lack of social skill. For loners, solitude is simply a different way of living life, one which keeps sane those of us who find socializing exhausting.

Rufus challenges the media's automatic assumption that all serial killers are "loners" (demonstrably false) or that solitary children are bound to get into serious trouble (many of histories greatest geniuses and artists have been solitary souls). Rufus can write well and I applaud her for devoting much time to proudly thinking about solitude and defending those who rather be left alone.

VITAL LIES SIMPLE TRUTHS: The Psychology of Self Deception  Uk  Can by Daniel Goleman "Goleman states his thesis using three premises in the early pages of his book: (1) The mind can protect itself against anxiety by dimming awareness. (2) This mechanism creates a blind spot: a zone of blocked attention and self-deception. (3) Such blind spots occur at each major level of behavior from the psychological to the social. (p. 22)

With these principles as his map, Goleman writes an excellent study of human psychological behavior that, whether the reader approaches it as a journal of self-discovery (like me) or as a explanation for social "groupthink" (like me, again), it proved to be very helpful. I enjoyed how Goleman supported his ideas with recent research and how he used quotes and references to support his ideas. Mapping out why we cover our anxieties with delusional behaviors, well, I think it is fascinating and the applications are immense."

The Stranger In The Mirror  Uk  Can by Marlene Steinberg and Maxine Schnall "This book was extremely helpful to me, but it does have some limitations. "The Stranger in the Mirror" is mainly a self-diagnostic book to understand dissociative disorders. The limitation is that it doesn't include self-management of symptoms. Nonetheless, I still found this book to be invaluable for understanding the different kinds of dissociation, and the degrees to which it is a part of my life. It is great to read a book that focuses solely on dissociate symptoms, and goes into such depth. After reading this book I was able to understand the forms of dissociation that I struggle with, and that there really is hope to someday transcend depersonalization/derealization."

Boundaries  Uk  Can by Henry Cloud, John Townsend "I have worked as a jail chaplain for almost twenty years and this book has been both an inspiration and a clarifier. Not only is it important for me to set clear boundaries in the work place with inmates, but because of the nature of the work on my personal life, I've needed to set countless boundaries in my relationship with people who don't understand my love and concern for the incarcerated. I have asked all of my volunteers to read the book also because we've used it as a teaching tool for inmates, most of whom have never learned how to set boundaries. We have found it most helpful in dealing with battered and abused women, as well as those needing anger management. Because the text is filled with biblical principles, I believe it is in line with what God chooses for us, but allows us to make the choice for ourselves. Personally, I also have children and grandchildren and I'm using the guidelines to create a place of harmony in my home. Thank you, Drs. Cloud and Townsend for giving us a user friendly guide to boundaries and the happiness they give."

Trapped in the Mirror by Elan Golomb "Narcissism has become a rampant dis-ease in our consumer driven, instant-gratification-or-die culture. Golomb's work can help readers identify the narcissists in their lives, and their own narcissistic tendencies as well. And she offers hope for those who are willing to take the risk to escape from the mirror.... Often, being able to identify a problem is the first step to being able to accept it, and transform it. Golomb gives excellent information and personalized histories/herstories that clarify the sometimes subtle, but destructive control dramas used by narcissists to create their illusion-filled worlds. If you are considering taking the risk to free yourself from a narcissist this is an excellent resource. Information is power!

Mood Disorders: A Practical Guide (Practical Guides in Psychiatry) by S. Nassir Ghaemi

Facing Love Addiction : Giving Yourself the Power to Change the Way You Love by Pia Mellody, and Andrea Wells Miller "Beware to those of us who have emotional scars from childhood that propel us into painful love addictions with the emotionally challenged--this book is painfully accurate and deeply insightful. It's as valuable for "love addicts" as for "avoidance addicts." Best suggestion from the book: recognize the addiction and take time to center yourself. Best suggestion of all: Buy this book and keep it on your shelf, however painful it may be to face self-abuse, or abusive behavior toward your lover. Corny conclusion: The world would be a better place if more people knew from this book how we hurt each other."

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz "I have read so many books promising joy in my life, yet I have read none so simple and practical as that of the Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz. The book is a beautiful instruction guide to achieve a life of freedom and happiness. He teaches four lifestyle commitments, which can transform life into the realization of your own personal dream. Written from his heart, the Four Agreements has made profound changes in my life. What seemed insurmountable challenges became powerful lessons which I was able to embrace with faith and love. What is the dream that you hold for yourself? Allow the magic of don Miguel's wisdom to shift your life into a masterful awareness of all you want for yourself.Become the power that you want in yourlife, realize the opportunites before you and then you can live in a heaven created from the beauty of your own heart. I have given the book to many people, who, only reading it once, have initiated life changes. My personal experience with don Miguel is that no matter how little you are exposed to him, your heart will always be touched. He and his words are the touch of an angel. Treat yourself to a world without limits!'
