Our sincerest hope in building the Mental Health Sanctuary has been to help stop the pain for those that suffer so incredibly due to mental health disorders.

Since the inception of the sites in 1996, the Sanctuary has been running in the red. We work long hours and a third of that time is spent fixing things as we have outdated hardware and software. One computer is now down beyond repair and the other needs work.

If the Sanctuary has helped you or someone you love, we would appreciate your support.

Trans Liberation: Beyond Pink or Blue by Leslie Feinberg

(Excellent book where the author openly discusses her gender issues including many prejudices and ill treatment she has received from some people. She describes herself using many names - transgendered, masculine female, drag king, etc. Leslie discusses in detail what trans liberation is - the right to choose our gender.

I recommend this book to anyone with gender issues or seeking to understand someone with gender issues)

Many people find themselves trapped in a body, or shall we say, in a gender that feels uncomfortable to them. They feel on the inside that they are of the opposite gender what their physical body portrays. Or, perhaps they are confused about their gender.

Some go for sexual reassignment surgery or "gender reassignment surgery" which is quite expensive and is quite involved. Some just call it the "sex change" operation. If one can afford this therapy, the person has to be involved in therapy for at least two years and the last year living as the "intended gender."

Needless to say, there is tremendous stigma attached to a transgendered person in our society. People are made fun of, told they are abnormal, bad, etc.

Though it is difficult for many "straight" people to understand the gender issues many of these people are faced with, they need to be recognized in our society as people who might be undergoing a great deal of stress early on in their treatment and given a great deal of support and love, and acceptance for who they are right where they are.
