Ask the Therapist
ODD Adults
I am a therapist working with high risk families. Most of the
parents are
responsive to therapy.
Occasionally I work with a parent that demonstrates ODD symptoms (although I
realize the diagnosis is restricted to children). Their history suggests
they were ODD as children (although it was undiagnosed and untreated.)
What does the DSM call grown-up ODD kids? Antisocial personality disorder
doesn't quite fit. Any suggestions regarding treatment so we can get on with
therapy and the return of the children?
I wouldn't be so rigid about it. Common wisdom has it
that ODD kids turn
into ASPD adults, true. And sometimes not... Personally, I'd regard
it as
an undifferentiated Cluster B personality and go from there.
