Chronic Nausea

I am desperate to help my father with his chronic nausea. He is 71 years old and has had his share of health problems, triple bypass, removal of gallbladder, diverticulitis. He has gone for every test possible, because this chronic nausea is killing him. Finally, after the doctors can't find any reason for it they put him on valium and antidepressant medicine. I know he is also on blood pressure medication. He is wasting away to nothing and sleeping all day, so not to feel the nausea, he doesn't vomit. He said he just wants to die, he can't live like this anymore! I need help. Do you have any suggestions for me. This has been going on for over a year and his wearing him down terribly!!

I am not responding to this inquiry as a mental health professional, but as someone with decades of experience in Asian medicine, nutrition and as a certified Yoga teacher. This information is in no way to be interpreted as a "prescription" for internal or digestive health, but an educated opinion specific to your father's condition.

First, go to the health food store and get Aloe Vera Juice. It's nasty stuff -- bitter -- but he can mix it with apple juice...unsweetened,  organic...R.W. Knudsen is best. Have him drink 4 oz of the Aloe Vera Juice 3 times a day. This will calm the tissue irritation in his stomach and digestive tract and will promote healing. If he can stand it straight, all the better. I drink it straight out of the bottle, but it's an acquired taste.

Next, purchase "Garden of Life" (brand) Primal Defense (product). This is an HSO pro-biotic formula that will promote the re-growth of "good" bacteria in his digestive tract and help to replenish his overall digestive health. 2 tablets in the morning and 2 at night.

Finally, two things...first, ginger capsules. I like the "Nature's Way" brand...it's Twinlab and regulated, so you know what you're getting. A tablet in the morning and a tablet at night. This may give him a little heartburn...it's best to take it with food. Second, buy some raw ginger root...slice it very thin and keep it in the 'fridge. Whenever he feels nauseous, have him put a slice under his tongue...when the flavor is gone, he should chew it and swallow it. Again, this may cause a bit of burning sensation in the mouth and gullet. He'll get used to it.

You may also want to have him take Kelp capsules...again, Nature's Way. This will keep him hydrated and regulate his digestion and excretion.  Again, 2 and 2.
