Will a BPD Sufferer Take Blame for Something They Didn't Do?

My son , age 23 was diagnosed with BPD about 2 years ago. He was taped admitting to several crimes in our county. When I asked him why he said he did it, when we believed he had not, his reply was..."Mom, I just wanted a friend". He is facing some major legal battles and we have a good pair of attorneys but the tape is very convincing and my son denies now having committed the crimes or having little to no memory of the time frame. Everything happened about a year ago. I do not know what to think, but wonder, is it normal to admit to severe crimes if you suffer from BPD even if you are innocent. Self esteem issues have been a problem for him for a very long time. I believe that he was telling them what they wanted to hear and was technically set up by a so called friend.

It's quite common for a BPD sufferer to fabricate. And that fabrication can be to get attention or to catastrophize a situation in order to get sympathy or play the victim. On the other hand, they are just as likely to lie in order to deny culpability for some transgression or to eschew responsibility.

I can't give you a straight answer because there isn't one.
